Child-led inquiry in our sunlit morning classroom

A predictable day built around curiosity, nourishment, and quiet.

Toddlers and preschoolers flourish when they know what comes next. Our day alternates unhurried sensory investigation with warm community rituals, fresh seasonal nourishment, and deep restorative sleep.

  1. 8:00 to 9:00 am Arrival

    Gentle Arrivals and Open Studio

Children ease into the morning at their own speed. Quiet table invitations such as clay modeling, watercolor paper, and loose wood parts help little hands settle comfortably into the classroom space.

  2. 9:00 to 10:00 am Community

    Morning Gathering and Family-Style Snack

We sit together on the woven wool rug to share simple songs and notice the morning weather. Afterward, children pour their own oat milk from small pitchers and enjoy fresh berries and warm grains.

  3. 10:00 to 11:45 am Investigation

Unbroken Outdoor Play and Canopy Work

Rain gear on, every day. An expansive block of time dedicated to garden discovery, balance logs, mud kitchen engineering, and climbing under Portland's fir trees without adult interruption.

  4. 12:00 to 1:00 pm Nourishment

    Warm Shared Lunch

Wholesome vegetarian meals served family style at low pine tables. Children practice passing serving platters, using cloth napkins, clearing dishes, and conversation in small groups.

  5. 1:00 to 3:00 pm Restoration

    Cots, Storytelling, and Restful Quiet

Lamps are dimmed and lavender linen shades drawn. Toddlers and sleeping preschoolers sink into deep rest, while older wakeful children explore quiet basket books, soft felt boards, and floor puzzles.

  6. 3:00 to 5:00 pm Closing

    Afternoon Awakening and Garden Farewells

Gentle waking with warm tea or crisp apples, followed by free choice in the courtyard until pickup. Parents receive a mindful reflection on what caught their child's attention that day.

Rain or Shine in Portland

The forest canopy is our most generous classroom.

Every single day, Portland weather becomes part of the lesson. Clad in durable waterproof layers, children test their balance over nurse logs, track droplet pathways across cedar boughs, and build bone-deep confidence through unhurried physical inquiry.

Gross Motor Agility

Root steps, slick inclines, and loose stones cultivate intuitive balance and grounded spatial judgment.

Sensory Immersion

Damp fir needles, creek stone textures, and shifting seasonal canopy light tune deep observation.

All-Season Fortitude

Navigating mist and rain builds steady emotional grit and joyful acceptance of the natural world.

Educators anchored in deep listening and genuine attunement.

Every room operates on steady relationships. Our teachers slow down alongside children, observing natural fascinations, translating big feelings, and supporting independent problem-solving through each developmental threshold.

Core Classroom Presence

We honor children as competent collaborators. Rather than directing playtime from above, educators sit at eye level, ask thoughtful open-ended questions, and offer predictable emotional safety from morning arrival through afternoon quiet time.

Low Ratios and Cohort Continuity

Young children thrive when faces remain familiar season after season. Our dedicated classroom teams stay with their age cohorts throughout the entire program year to preserve foundational trust.

1:7 Preschool Ratio

Non-Coercive Guidance

Helping children identify frustration, establish physical boundaries, and seek help without punitive timeouts or forced compliance.

Reflective Observation

Daily documentation of emerging peer dynamics, material investigations, and motor milestones to continually adapt the room.

Shared Family Partnership

Daily check-ins at pickup, transparent weekly learning reflections, and seasonal parent-educator conversations.

Tuition schedules and enrollment steps, openly shared.

We believe early childhood care should feel predictable and transparent from day one. Little Acorn operates year-round with two thoughtfully prepared classrooms, wholesome organic meals, and consistent care teams.
